Meet Your New Lab Partner, Baxter

Manufacturing has moved to Asia. Large enterprises benefit from automation but it’s expensive and keeps small upstarts out of their markets. Those two statements are being challenged by advances in robotics.

Case in point, Rethink Robotics, headed by robotics pioneer of iRobot fame, Rodney Brooks, has created America’s first adaptive manufacturing robot, Baxter. Creatively redefining how robots can be used in manufacturing environments and providing a compelling and affordable alternative to offshoring, Baxter intelligently performs a variety of repetitive production tasks alongside people, safely and adaptively, using behaviour-based ‘common sense.’ With 360o sonar, a front camera and bump-sensing joints, it knows the difference between an object of production and a human presence, making automation safer than ever. Integration is simple, any worker can train Baxter to perform simple tasks through manual guidance without the help of a robotics technician, upgrades are inexpensive and everything is scalable, so whether big, medium or small, manufacturers can keep making locally and competing internationally.
