@Work

One interesting signal we were tracking back at the time of making Issue 1 was "digital nomadism" or the new kinds of work configurations enabled by the web. This reality has obviously accelerated considerably since we first wrote about it.

Where does the job end and the person begin? It’s increasingly difficult to tell. The days when work and playtime were two separate parts of life are gone. The dedicated now have a life that seamlessly combines work and play. Technology, such as laptops and smartphones, has helped create this lifestyle allowing for the synthesis of business, culture, design and style.

Take it up a notch with regular—or even constant travel—and you have Monocle, the diversified media platform, that seems to embody the seamless blend of work and play. According to Rick Liebling, creative culturalist at Y&R New York, it is the authority on how to create a seamless @work lifestyle while making it all look stylishly easy. Or, as Ruaridh Nicoll said, it’s about the “infrastructure of living internationally”. The people they profile live in a world where there are no distinctions between business and style, between the personal and professional life.
